Update from the Greens (March 28, 2017)

Update from the Greens

This is my first letter of 2017 and it explains what has been accomplished over the winter months and my best guess as to what the opening date will be for the golf course.  The weather will dictate the actual date but my guess right now is the 15th of April. Last year we removed all the covers from the greens and tees on March 7th. This year we might be able to remove them by  April 1st and begin mowing the greens by the 8th of April. We experienced an unusually warm February this year, so I was able to inspect most of the greens and they appeared to be healthy and winter injury free. We then experienced more snow and colder weather so the greens are still covered under snow and ice at the time of this letter.

The tree work was the focus of the green department this winter. We were able to accomplish removing the majority of trees that the USGA agronomist, Jim Skorulski and golf course architect, Rob McNeil outlined in their reports. There were also trees that were removed for safety reasons and I have included pictures showing how hollow and rotted they were after cutting them down.

Green chairman, Frank Cole continued to monitor the project which started last year and he continues to adhere to the green committee’s main objective, which is to make Kernwood a more playable and safer golf course for the entire membership. In addition to trimming and cutting trees on the golf course we addressed areas around the clubhouse, pro shop, pool area, entrance and exit roads.

We look forward to opening the course this year and highlighting the improvements that we feel are long overdue.  Because the majority of the work was accomplished by our own staff the cost was kept to a minimum.  We look forward to having Rob McNeil visit Kernwood again in early May for another town hall meeting to hear his comments on past and future improvements to the golf course.

I will be posting updates on the club’s website and also on my twitter account @KernwoodGreens, to keep the membership updated on golf course information pertaining to  course closings, cart path restrictions and cultural practices important to maintain the golf course in great shape. Looking forward to warmer weather and  seeing you on the course this season.

Best regards,

John Eggleston

Meticulously researched and beautifully written, the true story of a Japanese American family that found itself on opposite sides during World War II—an epic tale of family, separation, divided loyalties, love, reconciliation, loss, and redemption—this is a riveting chronicle of U.S.–Japan relations and the Japanese experience in America.

Few figures in American history have been more hotly debated or more grossly misunderstood than Alexander Hamilton. Chernow’s biography gives Hamilton his due and sets the record straight, deftly illustrating that the political and economic greatness of today’s America is the result of Hamilton’s countless sacrifices to champion ideas that were often wildly disputed during his time. “To repudiate his legacy,”
